The act of releasing lanterns can be interpreted literally in various ways. Above all, it is important to honor the river goddess as the river is a crucial spiritual elements for all living beings. It also signifies letting go of negative thoughts and clearing away sadness.
Furthermore, Loy Krathong symbolizes love and romance, as couples can be seen sharing a floating lantern and lighting a candle together as they pray to the river goddess to bless their relationship at Loy Krathong night.

In the early 1990s, the Loy Krathong festival in Chiang Mai included the release of sky lanterns known as "Khom Loi Yee Peng" along with floating lanterns, gaining widespread popularity. Since sky lanterns captured the attention of many spectators, Sky Lantern has emerged as a fresh emblem of the Northern Loy Krathong festival.
Floating lanterns and sky lanterns have sparked controversy because of environmental concerns and waste management. Turtle Bay launched environmentally friendly lanterns - a turtle-shaped bread lantern that can be eaten by fish and a floating lantern with fixed position extinguishers. Hence, you can partake in customary practices while also being environmentally conscious.
